Sova. A docile, albeit ignited, beetle-like critter that peacefully inhabits the super-heated atmosphere of Norfair's lava pools. Their food causes them to erupt in flames, but their exceptionally tough skin protects them. Also, they traverse lava pools, so...so, really a little flame isn't worth notice.

This was done as an entry to the Metroid-Database's Beastiary project, under the 'Metroid - Zero Mission' section.

Another great piece from your metroid remakes. You are really lucky (Damn you have THE talent) to draw for the metroid database c: I wish I could design something for them. The embers are a very nice touch I must say and the eyes of the original sprite just creep me out!

I think your work would fit perfectly with them! You've got great anatomy and beautiful colours. Not to mention, your love of the Metroid series. Maybe try sending them a message? I noticed the art got selected for the database, congrats on that!

I never played metroid myself, so I don't know the original beast ('xept the little icon you have included on the art), but your art is really gorgeous.
I'm especially fond of your lines, I must say? I have a weakness for beautifully detailed lineart and weighted lines, so your lines always really get to me!
The overall design is really pretty, too. Love the spikes and the holes on the side, and how the colors sort of echo of each other? Like the color of the eyes can be found on the paws, and the pincers in the spine… It really ties it together nicely.
Just- overall a really, really beautiful piece of work and well deserved win

Thank you! In fact, I'm actually a member of the Beastiary team that was assembled by Infinity's End; our project director at the Database. He scouted artists from DA, as well as other online art communities, who shared a passion for the Metroid universe. The Sova is actually my fifth submission to the Beastiary as of yet (I've got three more in progress right now ; D ).

I really appreciate your compliments; I am borderline obsessive on the clarity of linework, haha. It's the longest part of the process for me. I also really enjoy a steady weight to lines; I feel like it gives the subject more dynamic, despite being in a 2-D plane. As for the colours, I tried to preserve the original scheme, while introducing more of a natural lavaflow palette. So instead of keeping only to the colours of fire and magma, I includes the tones of rock, dirt, and clay. C :

I was so glad they hadn't been already selected by another member of the art team. Everyone scrambled to get the big ferocious monsters; I happily swept up all the docile, indigenous, critters that just contentedly climb walls and dawdle along. . w .
Every time I look at this little one's face, I imagine the left and right eyes blinking together with top-bottom eyelids; then the middle eye blinking afterwards with left-right lids. It's all I can think about. I don't even know why. X D

Well, they recently opened Metroid Prime's list us to work on, and not too many people on the team have been very active lately, so there's a LOT of entries available for selection. A lot of them are mechanized type things - you're really great at drawing mechanical stuff; maybe something like that would be up your alley? : D
I'm about to go grab a few Tallon indigenous critters - I love drawing all the little bugs and crawlies that don't actually mean any harm, haha.
